One man was killed and three others injured in a three-vehicle wreck early Friday morning on Georgia Highway 16, just east of Hollonville Road.
“We got the call at 5:31 a.m.,” said Trooper J.T. McMillan, of the Griffin Georgia State Patrol Post. “It was a three-vehicle wreck with one deceased victim, two severely injured and one moderately injured.”
Officials say the collision resulted when one driver failed to maintain his lane of travel.
“The driver of vehicle one, who is deceased, is Chad Jenkins. He was 34 years old, from Senoia,” McMillan said. “He was driving a Ford Ranger eastbound on Highway 16. He crossed over the center line and struck a Ford F-250 head-on.”
“We had a single fatality,” Spalding County Coroner Sonny Foster said. “He died of multiple blunt-force trauma – he died instantly. It was probably one of the highest impact wrecks I’ve seen in a very long time. The force of impact virtually disintegrated the front end of both vehicles. The sheriff (Spalding County Sheriff Dee Stewart) and I do the notifications together. We’ve worked together for many years now and we try to do everything we can to help these families. The sad thing is, he (Jenkins) had a wife and three children. The oldest child was 10 years old, I believe.”
The driver of the second truck involved in the wreck, 28-year-old James Cruce, and his passenger, 38-year-old Donald Roberts, were entrapped as a result of the force of impact, but personnel from the Spalding County Fire Department were able to extract both victims from the wreckage without the use of any equipment.
“Both men were seriously injured with multiple fractures and Roberts also had a punctured lung,” McMillan said.
Spalding Regional Medical Center Emergency Medical Services personnel provided immediate patient care at the scene while awaiting the arrival of two Emory Flight helicopters which subsequently transported Cruce to Grady Memorial Hospital and Roberts to Atlanta Medical Center.
According to McMillan, a third man was injured when his vehicle, which was traveling westbound on Highway 16 behind Cruce’s truck, was unable to stop and struck the F-250 moments after the initial collision.
“The third vehicle involved, after the initial impact, was a Honda Civic driven by 20-year-old Jason Young. He couldn’t stop – he was following too closely and couldn’t stop in time – struck the F-250 within seconds of the other wreck,” McMillan said. “Due to the height difference of the two vehicles and the type of impact – he struck the rear of the truck – Young’s vehicle came to final rest with the rear of the truck resting on its hood.”
Although Young was transported by ambulance to the emergency room of Spalding Regional Medical Center, McMillan described his injuries as moderate.
“He had some facial injuries – cuts and bruises. He was being treated at Spalding Regional for non-life-threatening injuries. He was up and walking around at the scene,” he said.
Following the ensuing investigation, Highway 16 was reopened after a closure of approximately three hours.
McMillan said no charges are expected to be filed in the incident.
